Overview:
Alopecia Areata is a condition in which a person’s immune system attacks their hair leading to hair loss. Although there are some promising treatments, none of these work in all patients and we still don’t have good long term information on their safety and effectiveness. The first project in this proposal will compare how effective different oral medications are in children with alopecia areata based on patients we have treated up to now. The second will create a database of children affected with alopecia areata and collect information on their disease, treatments, and side effects and follow them over time. A small number of patients will also have their blood checked for possible markers of disease activity at a few time points over time to see if any of these could be used to monitor their disease.
