Frequently Asked Questions
I’m new here! Where can I find more information on the field of pediatric dermatology research?
Welcome to the Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance (PeDRA)! PeDRA was formed in 2012 with the goal of bringing together pediatric dermatologists from across North America to collaborate on research that would never be accomplished on a meaningful timescale were any investigator to take it on alone. Since then, PeDRA has been generating meaningful data to support health care decisions and improve the lives of patients and their families, while building a community of linked and research-ready clinician scientists in the field of pediatric dermatology. With more than 600 members representing more than 180 institutions, PeDRA is accelerating research and bringing us closer to new treatment opportunities for children and families living with dermatologic conditions and diseases.

What are the benefits of being a PeDRA member?
PeDRA is a vibrant community of dedicated investigators from many backgrounds who formulate ideas, establish collaborations, and conduct research in support of children and their families. Members have access to a growing list of centralized research support resources, can lead PeDRA Studies and Surveys, receive discounted registration to the PeDRA Annual Conference, and have the opportunity to get involved with PeDRA committees. Find more information on the benefits of membership here.
How do I become a member and how much does it cost?
Active Membership is $150/year, Affiliate Membership is $100/year, and Trainee and Community Memberships are FREE. You can find more information, including definitions of each membership categories, here.
I’m a medical student and interested in pediatric dermatology. How do I get involved?
The first step in getting involved is applying for membership. PeDRA is a vibrant community made up of many trainees and clinician investigators working on a variety of research projects across many disease states. Membership is free to trainees. Please apply here.
You can also find more information and resources specific to medical students here.
I’m a medical student and want to be connected to a specific individual that I named in my request.
Please contact us at info@pedraresearch.org with your request. PeDRA handles member connection requests on a case-by-case basis. PeDRA does not share contact information with people outside of the membership network. To apply for membership, please click here.
My medical school does not have a home program for dermatology. How do I find dermatologists or dermatology programs with mentorship opportunities, shadowing experiences, or research opportunities?
You can find a map of pediatric dermatology programs here.
How do I find a mentor?
PeDRA members have access to mentorship opportunities through the PeDRA Mentorship Program. The PeDRA Mentorship Program is a one-year program fostering meaningful relationships between early investigators and senior leaders to advance burgeoning careers. Mentees have access to established experts for feedback on ongoing research, challenging cases, and career guidance. The application window typically opens in the summer. Learn more here.
I’m not a pediatric dermatologist but I believe my research aligns with the field. Am I still eligible to apply for PeDRA grants?
Yes, PeDRA supports interdisciplinary collaboration and basic science research! Unless specifically stated in the RFA/RFP, applicants (including investigators or mentors) need not be trained in pediatric dermatology but must hold (or in some cases be in pursuit of) the degree of MD and/or PhD (or equivalent) and be eligible to apply for grants under the guidelines of their host institution.
You can view eligibility requirements in each grants RFP/RFA, in addition to PeDRA’s Grant and Fellowship Guidelines.
Where can I find more information on funded research?
View past recipients of grants and fellowships on each funding opportunity page or visit this page to see what we’ve funded. You can also learn more by browsing PeDRA publications here or listening to our Getting to Know Your Research podcast here, or PeDRA Pub Club podcast here.
Am I eligible to apply for PeDRA funding?
Probably! PeDRA offers a growing list of funding opportunities to trainees and investigators at many career stages and from many disciplines. Eligibility requirements can be found in the request for applications (RFA) for each funding opportunity and in our Grants and Fellowship Guidelines.
How do I request a consultation with PeDRA’s biostatistician?
PeDRA members may request free support from PeDRA’s in-house stats expert to plan studies, analyze data, and generate publications. Learn more about the eligibility requirements and apply here.
My child has a skin condition or disease. How can I find resources within your community?
PeDRA is proud to partner with patient advocacy organizations in many different disease areas, while also maintaining a Patient Advisory Committee with representation on the PeDRA Board of Directors. Explore our website and consider joining us as a Community Member of PeDRA to stay up to date, get involved in research, and join us at a future PeDRA Annual Conference.
I am developing a product to treat a pediatric skin condition and am seeking input from pediatric dermatologists. Can you connect me with your members?
PeDRA is dedicated to collaboration with companies developing products or devices for the management of pediatric skin diseases. This is true for companies in the very early stages of development all the way through to post-marketing activities once a product or device has been approved. Collaboration typically happens as part of the PeDRA Corporate Council but PeDRA is always open to exploring options to connect companies with our membership. Please contact us to learn more.
