Overview
Central lines are a necessary part of caring for ill children in the hospital. However, sometimes, the steps taken to keep central lines clean and safe for use may cause rashes that put children at risk for infection. Dermatologists from NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University Irving Medical Center are routinely asked to care for children hospitalized at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital (MSCH) with these rashes. To improve how we care for children with rashes at the sites of central line dressings, we plan to review the medical charts of children at MSCH who experience these rashes over a five-year period (2020-2025) to better understand why some children are more likely to experience these rashes. We will also gather the opinions of a group of healthcare providers from multiple specialties with experience caring for these rashes to develop a protocol to help healthcare providers at know how to best treat central line dressing-associated rashes.
