Overview
Congenital melanocytic nevi (CMN) are a type of birthmark which can be small, medium, large, or giant in size. Surgical removal of CMN can be straightforward when the CMN is small, or more complex when the CMN is large or giant. For the more complex surgeries, families must consider many different factors when making a decision. We aim to understand this decision process, as well as expectations and perceived outcomes of surgery. This information can be helpful to clinicians to better share information about surgery for families considering CMN removal.
Additionally, the surgery process can be stressful because there are many unknowns for families. We aim to conduct interviews with families who have undergone surgery and with surgeons, to uncover the steps in the surgery process. This information will create a surgical journey map to better prepare families on what they can expect through surgery and recovery periods.
