Overview
In pediatric dermatology, wait times to see a physician can be at least three months due to a shortage of specialists in this field. Because of these factors, more patients and their families are turning to the internet and social media as a more accessible means for medical information. Racial/ethnic minorities have been found to consult YouTube for health information more frequently. We hypothesize that individuals with limited access to pediatric dermatologists may utilize social media more often, as well as implement treatment and management strategies from these resources. Through anonymous online surveys, we will ask caregivers about their motivations, attitudes, and actions when using social media. It is important to learn how caregivers are interacting with social media in the realm of pediatric dermatology to facilitate conversations about how to find credible content, address misinformation, and advocate for more reliable information for communities with limited access to care.
