Overview
Limited access to dermatologic care for pediatric atopic dermatitis patients leads to poorer health outcomes with higher rates of emergency department visits and hospitalization for skin disease. Unfortunately, pediatric dermatology continues to rank among the most underserved pediatric subspecialties, with significant disparities in access to care for Black, Hispanic, and Medicaid-insured children. Although it is well known which populations of children are more vulnerable, less is known about how inequitable navigation of the healthcare system may be contributing to these disparities. The first objective of this study is to conduct a cross-sectional survey study utilizing an in-depth Barriers to Care Questionnaire to identify the factors that interfere with a caregiver’s successful navigation of the healthcare system as they seek pediatric dermatology care. Second, we will study one mechanism by which these barriers to care may lead to poorer health outcomes by affecting adherence to treatment and follow-up plans.
