Efficacy Outcomes of Scalp Cooling in Pediatric Solid Tumor Malignancies: A Prospective Case Controlled Study

Overview:

Children receiving chemotherapy for cancer often experience hair loss, which can cause significant emotional distress for both patients and their families. In some cases (about 14%), this hair loss can be permanent. Scalp cooling with a cold cap is a promising approach that may reduce, prevent, or even recover hair loss from chemotherapy, but it has not been well studied or federally approved for use in children with solid tumors.

In this study, we aim to investigate whether scalp cooling in adolescents undergoing chemotherapy can reduce hair loss, improve their quality of life, and remain safe, without increasing risk of cancer return. We will compare results between patients on chemotherapy who receive scalp cooling and those who do not. Our findings will provide important evidence for scalp cooling that could guide supportive care in pediatric cancer and improve the overall treatment experience for children and their families.
