PeDRA at SID 2025

PeDRA was proud to be part of the 2025 Society for Investigative Dermatology (SID) Annual Meeting, where groundbreaking science and collaboration took center stage. From cutting-edge research presentations to meaningful conversations with leaders in the field, the meeting highlighted the critical role of pediatric dermatology in advancing skin health for all ages. PeDRA Session

The PeDRA Session took place on Friday, May 9 from 7-8 AM PT. The session was moderated by Carrie Coughlin, MD, MPHS, and featured presentations by the below investigators.

Carrie Coughlin, MD, MPHS
Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis

Carrie C. Coughlin, MD, MPHS is the Director of the Section of Pediatric Dermatology and Associate Professor of Dermatology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and St. Louis Children’s Hospital. She specializes in treating patients with pigmented skin lesions and immunosuppressed patients. She directs the Pediatric Melanoma and Nevus Clinic, part of Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Her research interests include care of and decision making for patients with congenital nevi, cutaneous consequences of solid organ transplantation, and complications of cancer treatment. She is Chair of the Outcomes Committee for the Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance.

Kenji Kabashima, MD, PhD
Kyoto University

Kenji Kabshima is a chair and professor at the Department of Dermatology, Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine, Japan. Additionally, he is a principal investigator at SRIS/A*STAR in Singapore and a visiting consultant at the National Skin Centre in Singapore. His primary research interests include the mechanisms of inflammatory skin diseases (such as atopic dermatitis, contact dermatitis, and psoriasis) in both mice and humans and the 3D visualization of the skin using two-photon microscopy. His hobbies include marathons (his personal best is 2:54:38), trail running (Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc 170 km), golf, climbing, and traveling.

Anna Cristina Garza-Mayers, MD, PhD
University of Washington

Cristy Garza-Mayers, MD, PhD is a Pediatric Dermatologist and Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at the University of Washington and Seattle Children’s Hospital. Her research interests include pediatric vitiligo and improving access to dermatologic care. She is an active member of the Early Investigators Committee for the Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance.

Leo Shmuylovich, MD, PhD
Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis

Leo Shmuylovich, MD, PhD, is an assistant professor of dermatology, medicine, radiology, and pediatrics, and a principal investigator in the Biophotonics Research Center for Mallinckrodt Institute of Radiology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. Shmuylovich is a physician scientist with a weekly pediatric dermatology clinic, and he leads a monthly multidisciplinary vascular anomalies clinic. His research is focused on developing novel imaging technologies to help address unmet needs facing patients with skin disease including skin cancer and inflammatory conditions. A core goal is to build optical imaging devices that are accurate for any skin pigmentation type. A central theme of the research is leveraging the infrared spectral range (near infrared and beyond) to extract new insights into the pathophysiology of disease. After studying chemical engineering at Cornell University, Leo completed his MD/PhD with a doctorate in physics at Washington University. He then completed a fellowship in pediatric dermatology at Washington University and a residency in dermatology at Barnes-Jewish Hospital before pursuing postdoctoral work in the laboratory of Dr. Samuel I. Achilefu. In 2021, Shmuylovich was awarded the NIH Director’s Early Independence Award (DP5) to build short-wave infrared imaging devices for skin disease assessment and launched his independent lab.
