Clinical characteristics of Kaposiform Hemangioendothelioma not requiring medical or surgical intervention, a retrospective cohort study

Overview:

Kaposiform hemangioendotheliomas (KHE) are locally aggressive tumors with potential for significant hematological/coagulopathic complications, mass effect and residual skin changes and longstanding symptoms (chronic pain). However, not all patients require intervention and have a milder clinical course. We identified 7 patients with KHE from the vascular tumor registry at SickKids Hospital who did not require any intervention. Five of these patients had improvement of their lesions and 2 remain stable. None of these patients had an associated Kasabach Merrit Phenomenon (KMP).
Our goal is to identify and describe a subset of patients with KHE who do not require medical or surgical intervention through a retrospective, multicenter cohort study of patients with KHE. We propose to have at least 100 cases collected from multiple sites over a 1 year period. Data collection will be enabled using a RedCAP platform and will consist of demographics, clinical characteristics, treatment details and outcomes. A comparison between treated and non-treated patients will be performed. Risk factors/predictors for treatment need will be derived.

Status:

This project is seeking interested collaborators to conduct this study at their site. If interested, please contact: Dr. Elena Pope or Dr. Irene Lara-Corrales.
