    PeDRA staff had the opportunity to attend the 2022 SID Meeting in Portland, Oregon last month. The meeting was full of incredible presentations, abstracts, and groundbreaking science. While there, PeDRA conducted a series of short interviews with attendees and presenters like John Harris, MD, PhD, Joel Gelfand, MD, MSCE, FAAD, and PeDRA’s own, Dawn Siegel, MD to capture some exciting meeting highlights.

    Carrie Coughlin, MD, MPHS

    Dr. Coughlin is the Director of the Section of Pediatric Dermatology and Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis and St. Louis Children’s Hospital. Her practice is general pediatric dermatology, but she specializes in treating patients with pigmented skin lesions and immunosuppressed patients. She directs the Pediatric Melanoma and Nevus Clinic, part of Siteman Kids at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. She also holds a joint clinic with pediatric neuro-oncology caring for children with skin eruptions due to cancer therapies. She is Chair of the Skin Tumors and Reactions to Cancer therapies research group and the Outcomes Committee for the Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance. She is the Treasurer for the International immunosuppression and Transplant Skin Cancer Collaborative. She enjoys leading an Art and Medicine class for first year medical students. 

      John Harris, MD, PhD

      Dr. Harris is Chair of Dermatology, Director of the Autoimmune Therapeutics Institute, and Director of the Vitiligo Clinic and Research Center at UMass Medical School. He is a dermatologist and physician-scientist, caring for patients in a vitiligo specialty clinic and running a research laboratory focused on understanding disease pathogenesis and developing new treatments. His group integrates basic, translational, and clinical research strategies to accomplish this. As a result, early clinical trials in vitiligo have shown success. Dr. Harris founded Villaris Therapeutics, whose focus is to develop an effective, long-lasting treatment for vitiligo, as well as NIRA Biosciences, Aldena Therapeutics, and Vimela Therapeutics, companies focused on inflammatory skin diseases.

        Amy Paller, MD, MS

        Dr. Paller is the Walter J. Hamlin Professor and Chair of Dermatology, Professor of Pediatrics, and Principal Investigator of the NIH-funded Skin Biology and Diseases Resource-based Center (SBDRC) at Northwestern. She served as Chief of Pediatric Dermatology at Northwestern’s Children’s Hospital until she became Chair of Dermatology at Northwestern in 2004. An author of more than 500 peer-reviewed publications, Dr. Paller has also edited several major textbooks in dermatology, among them Hurwitz’s Clinical Pediatric Dermatology (now 6th edition) and Fitzpatrick’s Dermatology in General Medicine. She is an NIH-funded investigator in both her laboratory-based and clinical research. She has directed the Pediatric Dermatology Clinical Trials Unit at Northwestern/ Lurie Children’s for the past 30 years and has been the lead investigator on several landmark trials in pediatric skin disease, particularly related to atopic dermatitis (AD), psoriasis, and genodermatoses. Her laboratory focuses on skin innervation in inflammatory diseases, wound healing, and topically delivered gene regulation through nanotherapy. She has defined skin and blood biomarkers for children with AD and ichthyoses towards pathogenesis-directed therapy and has developed new patient-related outcomes scales for itch and stigma in children. Dr. Paller was the inaugural President of the International Eczema Council and inaugural co-President of the Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance. She has been President of the Society for Investigative Dermatology, Society for Pediatric Dermatology, and the Women’s Dermatologic Society. She is currently President of the International Society for Pediatric Dermatology. She has served on Council and the Board of Scientific Councilors for NIH/NIAMS, and on numerous boards for dermatology patient advocacy organizations. She has received several honors for her scholarship, leadership and mentorship, among them election to the American Association of Physicians and the American Dermatological Association, and awarding of the Stephen Rothman Award from the Society for Investigative Dermatology, Mentor of the Year, Rose Hirschler, and the Wilma Bergfeld, MD Visionary & Leadership awards from the Women’s Dermatological Society, the Clarence S. Livingood, MD Memorial Award from the AAD, the Founder’s Award from the Chicago Dermatological Society, the Tanioku Kihei Memorial Award from the Japanese Society for Investigative Dermatologist, and the inaugural Paula Stern Outstanding Women in Science and Medicine Award from Northwestern.

          Dr. Gazelle is a former hospice physician, part-time Harvard Medical School Assistant Professor, and Master Certified Coach for physicians. Having coached over 500 physicians and physician leaders, Dr. Gazelle understands all of the challenges that healthcare presents, both during COVID and beyond.

          A dynamic speaker known for her engaging, practical, and humorous style, Dr. Gazelle is a certified mindfulness meditation teacher and the author of the 2020 Everyday Resilience.             Lara Wine Lee, MD, PhD

            Dr. Lara Wine Lee is originally from the Washington, DC area. She received her undergraduate degree from Harvard University. She completed the Medical Scientist Training Program at the University of Pennsylvania. She completed general pediatrics residency at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia prior to her dermatology residency at the University of Pennsylvania. She subsequently completed fellowship training in pediatric dermatology at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. She joined the dermatology and pediatrics departments at MUSC in 2014. At MUSC she is the director of clinical research for the Department of Dermatology where she guides a robust clinical trials program and a research fellowship as well as mentoring students in the Masters of Science in Clinical Research program. She also serves at the Associate Residency Program Director and the Director of the Pediatric Dermatology Fellowship Program.  Her clinical interests include general pediatric dermatology with specialty interests in pediatric inflammatory skin conditions, vascular anomalies, and genetic skin disorders. 

              John Browning, MD, FAAD, FAAP, MBA

              Dr. Browning obtained his undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University and his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston where he was a member of AOA. He completed a pediatric residency at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston and then another residency in dermatology, also at Baylor College of Medicine where he was Chief Resident. He completed a fellowship in pediatric dermatology at Baylor and Texas Children’s Hospital in 2008.

              Dr. Browning is a clinical assistant professor of pediatrics and dermatology at Baylor College of Medicine and adjunct faculty at UT Health San Antonio as well as UIW School of Medicine. He also serves as the Chief of Dermatology at the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.

              Dr. Browning is the founder of Texas Dermatology and Laser Specialists where he sees patients, teaches, and is heavily involved in clinical research trials.

                Elena Hawryluk, MD, PhD

                Elena B. Hawryluk, MD, PhD is a board-certified Dermatologist and Pediatric Dermatologist, and Assistant Professor of Dermatology at Harvard Medical School, where she serves as the Faculty Director of Pediatric Dermatology for the Harvard Combined Dermatology Residency Program.  After graduating from Carnegie Mellon University with degrees in Computer Science and Biological Sciences, she completed her medical degree (MD) and PhD (Cell Biology and Molecular Physiology) at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine’s Medical Scientist Training Program.  Dr. Hawryluk completed her internship at St. Vincent Hospital, followed by dermatology residency at Harvard Medical School, where she served as a Chief Resident.  Subsequently, she undertook advanced fellowship training in Pediatric Dermatology at Boston Children’s Hospital and was supported by the Dermatology Foundation’s Fellowship in Pediatric Dermatology award.  She serves on committees for the American Academy of Dermatology and Society for Pediatric Dermatology and is the Chair of the American Academy of Dermatology’s Melanoma and Skin Cancer Community Program Committee. Dr. Hawryluk has a clinical interest in pigmented lesions and melanoma, particularly in the pediatric population.  She has authored both primary research and review articles on melanoma and pigmented lesions and has delivered presentations at regional and national meetings on these topics. She has been supported by the Society for Pediatric Dermatology and Pediatric Dermatology Research Alliance’s Weston Career Development Award and the Dermatology Foundation Pediatric Dermatology Career Development Award.

                  Lucinda Kohn, MD

                  Lucinda Kohn, MD is an Assistant Professor of Dermatology at the University of Colorado, Anschutz Medical Campus and practices pediatric dermatology at the Children’s Hospital of Colorado. Dr. Kohn’s main area of academic interest is focused on increasing access to pediatric dermatology care for all children. She is affiliated with the Centers for American Indian and Alaska Native Health at the Colorado School of Public Health and is particularly focused on addressing disparities in dermatology care in American Indian and Alaska Native populations. Her overall career goal is to develop high quality, ethical, and replicable programs to expand pediatric dermatology to American Indian and Alaska Native youth.

                    Leo Smuylovich, MD, PhD

                    Dr. Shmuylovich is a Pediatric Dermatologist in the Division of Dermatology and a postdoctoral scholar in the Optical Radiology Laboratory at Washington University in Saint Louis, Missouri. He is at the start of his career as an MD/PhD dermatology physician scientist. His training has included both a Bachelors of Science in Chemical Engineering and a Physics PhD, and inspired by his quantitative background, he is focused on developing novel tools that objectively measure skin disease. The research mission of his lab will be the development technologies that provide all patients with access to accurate diagnosis and management of skin disease and improve treatment outcomes.
