Investigation of Pediatric Onset Discoid Lupus

November 10, 2019 By Mike Siegel

Principal Investigator:

Lisa Arkin, MD
University of Wisconsin

Overview:

This is a multi-centered, retrospective cohort study of pediatric patients with discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE). The primary aims are to:

1. Determine the cross-sectional characteristics of pediatric patients presenting with DLE;

2a. Determine the incidence of progression to systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) in children who present with “skin-limited” DLE;

2b. Describe the clinical phenotype and disease severity of SLE in affected patients;

2c. Determine risk factors for progression of DLE to SLE;

3. Describe differences between patients with DLE seen by rheumatologists, those seen by dermatologists, and those seen by both.

The primary endpoint of the study is to determine the cumulative incidence of SLE in pediatric patients with DLE.

Status:

This study was funded as a 2017 PeDRA Team Grant and is currently underway. Data collection is complete and two manuscripts are being prepared for publication.
